Fun Activities to Do With Your Elders they find some time

In a person’s very busy schedule, it is important that they find some time in their life for their family members. This includes your elder relatives. There is nothing more valuable than family time, so you should work hard to try and have as much of it as possible.

It’s worthwhile to try and make your time with your elders as memorable as possible. There are plenty of things you guys can do together as opposed to just sitting down and having a conversation. You can choose these activities based on energy levels, the weather, or the location. In regard to the following activities, it doesn’t matter if your older relative is at home or in a care facility. Many senior living options, such as memory care Los Gatos, will allow frequent and lengthy visits, meaning you will have plenty of time to fill with some fun activities. If you are stuck for ideas in terms of how to spend your time with your loved ones, there are some ideas listed below. Be sure to mention them to your elders and ask them which ones they may want to try.

Nature Walk

A nature walk is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things people can do, of all ages. You get to enjoy some lovely fresh air, see some great wildlife and get in some relaxing and healthy exercise. You may be surprised by just how accessible nature walks are. Nearly every decent-sized area will have one,  though they sometimes just take a bit of finding. Be sure to try and identify as many plants and animals as you can. It’s also a good idea to bring a pair of binoculars for some bird spotting. This is an activity that is certainly weather and energy-level dependent. But if possible, it is definitely worth doing.

Board Games

Although they may not be quite as popular as they used to be, there is still an abundance of fun to be had while playing board games. There are still so many options on the market. Each with its own rules and structure, which means it’s hard to get bored when switching up what games you play. You could try playing some of the classics, or you could also look into some of the more modern board game releases. You can also include other people in the game. This could be other members of the family or other residents at a nursing home. This is a great low-energy option, as long as the competition doesn’t get too intense.

Exercise

If you are someone who goes to the gym and deadlifts 100kg or more, it’s probably not the best idea to ask your grandparents to tag along. That doesn’t mean you can’t work out together though. Even as people get older, exercise is still really important. It is actually something that is probably overlooked by a lot of people. You should do your best to try and encourage some light, frequent exercise for your older relatives. It will also probably make it considerably easier to start and stick to if they have someone involved with them. It shouldn’t be anything too strenuous. A walk is usually one of the best options. Depending on their age, fitness, and mobility, you can then consider some other exercises for the elderly. Be very careful with the frequency of this activity, however. After all, you don’t want to overwork your poor elderly relatives.

Family Gatherings

If you and your elders have a chance to just sit down and talk, you could work on planning a family get-together. This will be a great chance for everyone to see each other once again. Of course, you won’t be able to set anything in stone between the two of you, but you can work out other details, such as where can you have it, who should be there, and a rough date to aim for. This is a fantastic thing to do, and the truth is not enough families do it. You should definitely try to work something out as soon as possible for you and your family.

Movies and TV Shows

Another nice and relaxing activity that the two of you can enjoy is just sitting back and watching some entertainment. With the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ so accessible now, it’s so easy to watch great content from almost anywhere. You can both decide on a TV show that interests the two of you. You can then work on watching it altogether, which is sure to keep you occupied for a number of weeks. Alternatively, you could choose to watch some films. Watch something brand new together, or else take turns showing each other some of your favorite movies. This would also be a great way for you both to experience some new and different films.

Reading and Writing

Again, this is a great, fun activity that doesn’t require any strenuous effort. Reading or writing is a great way to get your mind working while relaxing. Reading allows you to really open your mind and get engrossed in another world. You could both try reading the same book, and discussing its contents, almost like your own personal book club. Or, you could read different books and compare and potentially recommend books to each other. Sometimes, it’s nice to even just be in someone else’s presence while reading.

As for writing, the possibilities are endless. There are plenty of writing games that the two of you could play for starters. You could write about each other in a biography format, which could be a nice thing to do a few years down the line. You could also write about events that have happened in both of your pasts. This is a great way to learn about each other, as well as opening your creative mind. What you write is up to you and your loved one, but there are so many options it is unlikely you will get bored of writing too quickly.
