Nashville Fire Department Installs Mobile Computers

NASHVILLE – A joint effort between the Town of Nashville and the Nashville Fire District Auxiliary, a non-profit organization made up of local community supporters of the Nashville Fire Department, recently provided $16,000 for Mobile Data Terminals and Software for the department’s primary responding Engine and Fire Chief.

The software being used by the Nashville Fire Department consists of three parts:

Upon receipt of an alarm, fire department personnel can locate the exact location of any address within Town of Nashville and Nash County. In addition, hydrant locations, landing zone locations and many additional predetermined GIS shape files are preloaded and are available on the MDT screen.

Pre-Incident Plans are currently being converted from hard copies over to drawing files that are linked directly to the address of the incident. Once the address of an incident is entered, searched and located, the user touches a linked file button and is carried directly to the drawing of the building. As new buildings are being constructed within the response area, local architects are supplying their drawing files in AutoCAD, which are easily converted directly over to a pre-incident plan.

Once the initial unit arrives on the scene of the incident, the user touches the ICS button, which carries him/her directly to the Incident Management screen. The Incident Management structure may be pre-set for ease of operation or created during the incident. Personnel can be easily assigned to their Groups, Divisions, Assignments, etc. and may be moved from place to place throughout the incident thus ensuring personnel accountability. Pre-set timers remind the Incident Manager to conduct PAR reports and evaluate Operational Modes. Every assignment, benchmark and decision is logged by actual time and can be easily downloaded into the NFIRS remarks field at the termination of the incident. Several databases, including NIOSH and the ERG guidebook are instantly available and information can easily be printed at the incident.

The FIREbase Map and FIREbase PIP software is provided by Mapping Solutions, Inc. and Fieldsoft, Inc. provides the FD-On-Scene software for incident management. FD-On-Scene is fully compliant with NIMS.
