Zimbabwe citizens now requires a license to run a WhatsApp group

Harare | The Zimbabwean government has made a new rule regarding WhatsApp groups. Under this, now to run a WhatsApp group, one has to register with the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and obtain a license. For this license, the group admin will have to pay a minimum of Rs 4,150 (50 dollars). The licensing fee can go up to a maximum of Rs 2 lakh (2,500 dollars) depending on the type of WhatsApp group.

Communications Minister Tatenda Mawetera said – The purpose of this rule is to stop fake news and unrest. The WhatsApp group admin has the phone numbers of all the people. Therefore, it comes under DPA. The licensing process will help in finding the source of false information.
